What is a port-wine stain?
The name port-wine stain, also called port-wine stain, at first sounds more dramatic than the appearance. We are talking about a clearly visible reddening of the skin, which in most cases is already present from birth. Sometimes port-wine stains develop during childhood and grow with the child. If it is not a “stork bite”, laser treatment is recommended. One of the reasons for this is also that a port-wine stain continuously darkens in adulthood and thus usually becomes more visible.
Where does a port-wine stain develop?
A port-wine stain is basically benign and harmless. Nevertheless, it is a malformation that affects blood vessels on the surface of the skin. These tend to grow and are also clearly dilated. Port-wine stains can be found in almost every region of the body, although unfortunately the head with the face and neck is particularly affected. In terms of size and color, there are numerous variants. In other words, a port-wine stain can turn out to be small as well as cover entire parts of the body and, with regard to the coloration, can vary between bright red and dark violet.
Why should a port-wine stain be removed?
There are good reasons to have a port-wine stain removed by laser in Berlin. Even if the growths are almost always benign, it should be ensured in advance that it is not the result of a disease. The fact is that in medical terms 30 syndromes can also lead to port-wine stains. More decisive, however, is the psychological effect caused by a port-wine stain. People who suffer from such a skin irregularity are literally “marked”, which can be easily changed.
How to remove a port-wine stain in Berlin with laser?
If you want to have a port-wine stain removed in Berlin with laser, we work with Flashlamp pulsed dye laser (FPDL). We are talking about a color laser pulsed with flash lamps, which emits extremely short light pulses. The result is a gentle but lasting treatment that affects the blood pigment in the capillaries. This is converted into heat, thereby occluding or coagulating the vessels. The resulting sclerotherapy is virtually painless and rarely requires local anesthesia.
What should I pay attention to when treating a port-wine stain?
If you want to treat a port-wine stain with laser, several appointments may be necessary, depending on the size and thickness. In some cases, health insurance will contribute to the cost of treatment, but this cannot be guaranteed.
