What are freckles?
When it comes to freckles, opinions differ. Some were downright “smitten”, as it is called in a well-known German pop song, others would like to remove the freckles most of all. The fact is that freckles are caused by dark pigments called melanin. The pigment cells in the epidermis (melanocytes) produce these pigments, which then show up as pigment disorders in the neighboring horn-forming cells. Freckles appear when exposed to sunlight and may disappear completely in winter. Their size ranges from a few millimeters to a few centimeters, and their shape varies.
How are freckles formed?
In medical terms, freckles are not considered a disease, but a normal variant. In genetic terms, the melanocortin-1 receptor is slightly altered. Affected are mainly skin types I and II, i.e. people with fair skin. Freckles are not dangerous because they are merely color pigments and not new cells. Nevertheless, they are considered an indicator of an increased risk of skin cancer.
How to remove freckles in Berlin?
If you want to have freckles removed in Berlin, laser treatment with Picosure or Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) in particular prove to be effective. Both methods have individual advantages and achieve the desired goal quickly and without significant side effects.
Removing freckles by Picosure laser
Removing freckles by picosecond laser involves the use of a high-intensity light beam. This penetrates the upper layers of the skin and removes the deposited pigments. The advantage is that only the dark pigments absorb the laser light and the surrounding skin remains untouched. In some cases, the skin may burn a little after working with picosecond laser. In this case, care should be taken to avoid further irradiation with UV light, i.e. the skin should be spared for about two weeks.
Removing freckles by IPL
It is also possible to remove freckles by IPL. Behind the abbreviation hides Intense Pulsed Light, i.e. pulsed light that emits high energy. The resulting heat destroys the structure of the freckles and removes them.
