What is a birthmark?
Moles, in Latin nevi, are growths of skin cells that come in all imaginable shapes, colors and dimensions. The entire body can be affected, whereby there are naturally places where a birthmark is particularly disturbing. They are not always beauty marks à la Marylin Monroe, so that treatment or removal is often recommended. In medical terms, a birthmark is caused by a high concentration of pigment-forming cells, which is why the coloring is usually dark brown or even black. Birthmarks are sometimes present at birth or form spontaneously and in the course of age. A birthmark almost never disappears by itself and moreover there are almost no people who live without birthmarks. On average, there are 25 to 30 birthmarks on the human body.
Factors influencing a birthmark
Every birthmark should be examined by a doctor to determine its possible malignancy. Don’t worry: in the rarest cases it is skin cancer, and going to the dermatologist is routine after a certain age anyway. UV radiation can promote the formation of moles, so direct exposure to the sun is not recommended from this point of view.
How can a birthmark be removed?
Removing a birthmark is possible without any problems. It is done with a laser, which is gentle on the skin and does not cause any pain. The laser works with precisely dosed and targeted light pulses that destroy the color pigment melanin. This is subsequently transported out of the body by the natural metabolism, which takes a few days. In addition, in the case of larger moles, repeated treatment may be necessary. There are no side effects from birthmark removal in Berlin.
