Melasma is, according to a purely medical definition, pigment spots in women caused by hormonal changes during pregnancy. However, the term is increasingly used synonymously with chloasma. It also refers to pigmentary changes on the face that may have other underlying causes, such as treatment with artificial hormones, medications, or in response to contact with certain plants.
