Everyone has them, but nasolabial folds are not always equally pronounced. We are talking about the wrinkles that start at the wing of the nose and end at the corners of the mouth. In common parlance, they are often referred to as a “grief line”, which underlines the detrimental visual effect. In fact, people with pronounced nasolabial folds appear older and a little sad.
The effect of the nasolabial fold can be intensified if there was an extensive body of fat on the cheeks in younger years which is now sagging. A gentle remedy is injecting the nasolabial folds with hyaluronic acid filler. Unfortunately, there are no creams for nasolabial folds. Of course, a healthy lifestyle can influence the depth and speed with which the wrinkles appear, but even then the course of time cannot be stopped. Alternatives are a comprehensive facelift, which, however, consists of a real operation and brings with it the corresponding side effects. For those who prefer a gentler approach, nasolabial folds can be removed or at least softened by injecting hyaluronic acid.
Injecting nasolabial folds with hyaluronic acid has several advantages. On the one hand, the furrows in the face are padded and lifted, as it were, and on the other hand, this stabilises the skin. The result: the face appears softer. The treatment is performed with blunt cannulas and takes about 20 minutes. Since the procedure is almost painless, there is usually no need for anaesthesia or aftercare. It depends on the individual skin type and connective tissue whether the injection is carried out in the deep subcutaneous tissue or closer to the surface. It is important to work with a stabilised hyaluronic acid gel because this has a more permanent effect.
First of all, it is unfortunately not possible to remove nasolabial folds permanently. Since hyaluronic acid is a substance that is also found in the human body, it is completely broken down after about nine months. In many cases, however, the natural production of collagen fibres is stimulated, so that permanent effects can be seen. In addition, it is possible to have a refresher treatment at regular intervals, whereby two appointments a year are usually quite sufficient.
There are very few risks and side effects associated with the treatment of nasolabial folds. Of course, small bruises can always occur and inflammation is also possible. However, these are isolated cases. Accordingly, sports can be practised again the day after the treatment.
