What does bruxism mean?
The term bruxism has its origins in Greek and refers to the grinding of teeth, which usually occurs at night. The consequences are extensive and include excessive tooth decay and excessive strain on the periodontium. Bruxism also causes damage to the temporomandibular joint, the masticatory muscles and other muscles in the skull. Visual disturbances, dizziness, tinnitus and nausea are also possible as a result.
How teeth grinding or bruxism is treated today
To date, teeth grinding, bruxism or masseter hypertrophy have generally been treated with simple self-massage or physiotherapy. A “grinding splint” is also made in severe cases to reduce the wear and tear on the teeth. The fabrication is complex and requires precise interaction between dentist and dental technician, which is why the costs are often high. However, our experience shows that many patients are not satisfied with this splint.
A very effective alternative is to inject botulinum toxin specifically into the chewing muscle. A few days after the Botox injection in our BellaDerma specialist center in Berlin, the chewing muscles relax and the bruxism decreases significantly.
How can Botox combat teeth grinding?
The Botox approach to treating teeth grinding takes into account the excessive formation of the chewing muscles. Due to the fact that they move from night to night, excessive force occurs, which damages the teeth. Botox is injected into the jaw muscles and helps to weaken the masseter muscle. This can of course still be used, but its excessive functionality has deteriorated.
Botox shows its effectiveness against teeth grinding after just a few days. In some situations, the result may be asymmetrical at first, meaning that the relaxation is stronger on one side of the jaw than the other. However, this effect diminishes over time and long-term relief is achieved.
Due to the fact that botulinum injection into the masseter is a so-called “off-label” administration, Azzalure, Bocouture, Botox, Dysport, Vistabel and Xeomin are also authorized. It is recommended that three Botox treatments be carried out in the first year, followed by two more to permanently eliminate bruxism.
