What are blackheads?
Blackheads belong to the group of comedones, and there are basically two types, the so-called “whitehead” and the “blackhead”. Whitehead is a white, closed nodule, while blackhead is an open, dark colored blackhead. The dark coloration is caused by the skin pigment melanin, which is activated by the opening of a blackhead.
Blackheads – Cause
Comedones are the direct result of excessive sebum production. When the excess sebum clogs the dilated pores and closes the hair canal, the sebum can no longer be transported to the skin surface and a plug of horny cells and sebum forms. This plug is called a blackhead.
As long as this plug is self-contained, it remains white. However, if the blackhead tears slightly at the sides, the pigment melanin oxidizes, tiny impurities enter the opening, and the blackhead turns dark.
Removal of blackheads
Many people think that blackhead removal is unproblematic. Unfortunately, this is not entirely true. Because if removed improperly, by squeezing or scratching, the sore spot can quickly become inflamed and pimples will appear. Therefore, it is better to leave the removal of blackheads to a beautician or dermatologist.
